This story comes to us from Carol Terry:

LARGO, MD –Prince George’s County Executive Rushen L. Baker, III signed Executive Order 13-2011 authorizing the Department of Environmental Resources (DER) to establish a fuel cost emergency surcharge of $1.00 that will be charged per trip in addition to the regular taxi fares.  The fuel cost emergency surcharge will not be charged to any person who is 60 years of age and over or for any fare pursuant to any County contract.

Section 20-160.01(a) of the Prince George’s County Code authorizes the County Executive to declare a fuel cost emergency when the average retail price of regular gasoline exceeds $3.00 per gallon.  The Code further states that the County Executive can authorize the Director of the Department of Environmental Resources to establish a fuel cost emergency surcharge.

The fuel cost emergency surcharge will take effect immediately and will remain in effect through June 30, 2012.   The surcharge may be rescinded earlier by an Executive Order or by a finding by the County Executive that the average price of regular gasoline in the region has fallen below $3.00 per gallon.
