Four Catholic Schools Win National Blue Ribbon Honor

170 Montgomery County Public School Students Are National Merit Semifinalists

170 Montgomery County Public School Students Are National Merit Semifinalists

 

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has 170 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists in the 2012 competition, 13 more than the previous year. The semifinalists will go on to compete nationally for scholarships that will be offered in the spring. The competition is sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. 

The MCPS semifinalists come from 14 high schools. The high schools and number of semifinalists are:

Bethesda-Chevy Chase: 14

Montgomery Blair: 44

James Hubert Blake: 1

Winston Churchill: 13

Albert Einstein: 1

Walter Johnson: 9

Richard Montgomery: 39

10 Howard County Public Schools Not Open

 

Superintendent Sydney Cousin announced that Howard County public schools will open, Tuesday, Aug. 30, even if power has not been restored to all schools. ,  Dr. Cousin indicated that any schools without power will be closed, but the remainder of the schools will open on time.

School officials are confident that the varying degrees of water damage found in nearly half the system's 73 schools would be cleaned up by the end of the Monday. Crews also worked to clear debris from play fields and playground areas.

On Tuesday, August 30th, power has been restored to all Montgomery County Public Schools. All schools will open on time.

According to Montgomery County Public Schools:

Due to emergency weather conditions related to Hurricane Irene, all community activities in school buildings are cancelled Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28.
 
Backpacks and school supplies that were to be available at the cancelled Back-to-School Fair, for families in need,  will be distributed, while supplies last, on Monday, August 29 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive, in Rockville.

Montgomery County Public Schools will be back in session on Monday, August 29, and Police Chief J. Thomas Manger, along with the officers of the Montgomery County Police Department, want to encourage all community members to continue to make the safety of our children a top priority.
