News

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) -- The Baltimore-Washington Parkway is back open after it was shut down for hours after a deadly accident.

Sgt. David Schlosser with the U.S. Park Police says the victim was a woman.

The fatal accident happened around 3:15 a.m. Monday in Laurel. Sgt. Schlosser says her car was headed northbound on the parkway when it struck a tree and she was killed.

The force of the impact shattered the windshield and knocked the car engine out.

Authorities closed the parkway at Route 197 in Laurel for the reconstruction team to work at the scene. The team is trying to figure out what lead to the crash.

The parkway opened at around 8 a.m., five hours after the accident happened.

Near the same location 24 hours earlier, a woman died in a two car collision and sent two others to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Park Police are investigating the cause of both accidents.
