LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- A fire broke out Friday night at the former site of the Forest Haven mental health facility in Laurel.

An Anne Arundel County fire spokesperson said the fire broke out at the vacant building at 8400 River Road at around 10:10 p.m.

The Forest Haven facility, which was officially known as the D.C. Children's Center, was an asylum for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The facility was closed in 1991.

Fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
