34 displaced after tree falls on Md. apartment

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Severe weather Thursday afternoon caused damage around the D.C. area.

In Maryland, 34 people are displaced after a large tree fell on three-story apartment building during heavy rain in Howard County Thursday.

It happened around 1:25 p.m. in the 9100 block of Stebbing Way. The entire apartment complex, which includes 12 units, are uninhabitable.

The tree caused extensive damage to the back of the building. One person who was at home self-evacuated, and two other people with minor injuries were evaluated on the scene.

There was a Tornado Warning
in effect in Howard County between 1 and 1:30 p.m.

In Virginia, lighting struck a house in the 2300 block of Ridge View Drive in Alexandria at 12:33 p.m., according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

The strike caused a small fire in the attic which was quickly brought under control.

There were no injuries to the occupants of the building or to firefighters, officials said.
