Reminder: Vacuum Leaf Collection Program Terminated
News

As a result of strict cost savings measures implemented last year, Prince George's County terminated the Vacuum Leaf Collection Program.  For more than 25 years, only 351 communities in the county received the special service, which was both expensive and time intensive. At the time of implementation, it was intended that the service would be expanded beyond the original communities, but due to a continued lack of identified funding, it was not.

Communities previously receiving Vacuum Leaf Collection are able to take advantage of the county's Curbside Yard Waste Collection Program, administered through the Department of Environmental Resources, Waste Management Group.  Yard waste is collected once a week, year-round in all areas receiving trash collection by the county.  To participate, residents need to bag and secure leaves in heavy-duty paper or plastic bags, or heavy duty trash cans with handles and a secure lid and then place the container(s) at the curb prior to or on the community's regularly scheduled yard waste pick-up day.

Residents who do not know what day yard waste is collected in their communities, should contact the Department of Environmental Resources at 301.952.7630.

In addition to bagging leaves for collection, residents are encouraged to mulch, compost or use leaves to cover plant beds and tree roots during the winter months.
