Police Officer Arrested in Theft of Guns

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team has arrested and charged Corporal Juan D. Carter with Misconduct in Office, Theft, and “Theft Scheme” stemming from an internal investigation into the theft of several confiscated guns.  Carter has been remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and a bond was set at $200,000.  Juan Carter is a 13-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department, who had been assigned to the Maryland State Police led “Gun Interdiction Task Force” since September 2007.

In November of 2009, the PGPD realized that several guns that had been seized by the gun interdiction task force were missing.  The PGPD’s Special Investigative Response Team initiated an investigation.  As a result of the investigation, Juan Carter was determined to be involved in the disappearance of the confiscated weapons.  Evidence obtained during the extensive investigation resulted in charges being filed against Carter.

“I am sickened that an officer on our police department could engage in such despicable behavior.  I applaud our Special Investigative Response Team for their relentless work that led to the closure of this crime.  Bad cops have to be rooted out; they tarnish the good work that is being done by the rest of our officers”, stated Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton.
