MDTA officer fires shot during Md. car chase


LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) -- A Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police Officer fired a single shot during a car chase on MD Route 200 Wednesday close to the mile marker 9.6, Maryland State Police Department said.

The pursuit happened around 12:31 p.m., according to authorities. The MDTA police officer initiated a traffic stop on an Infiniti for excessive speed, police said. The driver failed to stop and the pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle in the chase got stuck in traffic at Annandale and Old Gunpowder Rd. where the officer got out of his vehicle and tried to apprehend the suspect.

The suspect tried to run down the officer with his car and the officer then fired one round and hit the hood of the suspect's car, police said. The pursuit continued to 7301 Floating Leaf Court in Laurel, where the suspect was tased when he would not comply, authorities stated.

Boy struck by car in MD


ANNE ARUNDEL CO. , Md. (WUSA9) -- An 8-year-old Maryland boy is in the hospital with very serious injuries after being hit by a car.

It happened around 4:00 Sunday afternoon on Old Line Avenue near Wye Mills South Road, near Laurel in Anne Arundel County.

TJ Healy a witness described that: "We were in the house and I heard a thud and I knew right away what it was. My kids had been playing in the front yard with the boy who was hit."

TJ Healy thought for a second it was one of his children who got hit, when he came running out of the house.

"I saw my kids and I was somewhat relieved, I went to him and I did what I could," Healy said.

Witnesses say, a white truck parked on the side was a blind spot both for the driver and the boy. Healy says the boy was dragged several yards away and suffered broken bones and a head injury.

Fire at gas station after car pulls down pump

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- A fire sparked after a car pulled down a gas pump at a station in Laurel, Md. is now out, say Prince George's County fire officials.

Fire spokesperson Mark Brady says a gas nozzle was still in a car that just fueled up and the car pulled the pump down as it pulled away from the Shell gas station in the 700 block of Washington Blvd. on Wednesday.

No one was injured.

All roads are now open in the area.


34 displaced after tree falls on Md. apartment


LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Severe weather Thursday afternoon caused damage around the D.C. area.

In Maryland, 34 people are displaced after a large tree fell on three-story apartment building during heavy rain in Howard County Thursday.

It happened around 1:25 p.m. in the 9100 block of Stebbing Way. The entire apartment complex, which includes 12 units, are uninhabitable.


The tree caused extensive damage to the back of the building. One person who was at home self-evacuated, and two other people with minor injuries were evaluated on the scene.

MISSING: 16-year-old girl from Laurel


LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police are looking for a missing 16-year-old girl from Laurel.

Ciara Capri Holquist was last seen leaving her home in the 800 block of Hunting Lane in Laurel at 7 a.m. on October 7.

Ciara is described as a white female, 5' 2", 140 pounds, with brown hair. She was last seen wearing a pink hooded jacket, pink shirt, black pants, black boots, and a cheetah print backpack, police said.

Police: Suspect sexually assaulted 2 teens in Laurel


LAUREL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police will hand out a sketch of a man wanted for sexually assaulting two teenagers.

The suspect inappropriately touched the two victims in separate incidents the morning of Sept. 23 on Briarwood Drive at Briarcroft Lane, police said. The first one happened between 7:45 and 8 and the second at about 8:15.

In both cases, the suspect approached the victims as they walked in the area, touched them inappropriately and then ran away, according to police.

The suspect is described as a black male with a heavy build. He had dread locks pulled into a Mohawk style haircut at the time of the assault, police said.

Detectives will canvass the area of the assaults on Friday morning at 10 and pass out flyers with a sketch of the suspect.
