County Sets First Health and Wellness Expo

The Prince George’s County Health, Wellness and Recreation Advisory Council (HWRAC) and County Executive Jack B. Johnson are sponsoring the first health and wellness expo, “Wellness Works,” for county employees on October 7. All county employees are encouraged to attend and may be granted up to four hours of administrative leave by their agency or department appointing authority. Executive Jack B. Johnson will be attending.

The expo will feature demonstrations, vendors, informational handouts and various health screenings. This is the first major event sponsored by the HWRAC, which was created earlier this year.

Appearances will be made by County Executive Jack B. Johnson; Dr. Donald Shell, Department of Health Director; and others.

WHEN:

Thursday, October 7, 2010.

Two sessions: one from 8 a.m. to noon, and a second from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

Partners Plead Guilty to Embezzling Over $1 Million from Laurel Construction Company

Dwayne Wells, age 50, of Potomac, Maryland, and Charles K. Fash, age 52, of Rockville, pled guilty today to wire fraud in connection with a scheme to embezzle over $1 million from a mechanical engineering firm in which they were part-owners.

The guilty pleas were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and Special Agent in Charge Richard A. McFeely of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) -- Cal Kirby sits in his living room showing 9NEWS NOW's, Andrea Roane, one of his longest scenes in the Hawaii Five-0 of the 1970's.

"This is my scene when I'm in the taxi cab getting out."

Kirby appeared as an extra on the original show 17 times.

"I was 40 pounds lighter, and 38 years younger," smiles Kirby.

In the scene he shows 9NEWS NOW, Kirby is playing an undercover officer. One of Steve McGarrett's guys. McGarrett was portrayed by Jack Lord.

"He was very quiet, but very professional on the set," says Kirby. "He was a private type of person. And he didn't like a lot of horsing around. But he was always friendly to me."

LAUREL, Md. (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy from Elkridge has found a fossil at a dinosaur park in Laurel that appears to date back about 116 million years.

Aidan Isenstadt found the approximately 1 1/2 inch jawbone fragment last month while fossil hunting.

Matthew Carrano, curator of dinosaurs at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, says the fragment is part of a juvenile meat-eating dinosaur. He believes the find is the first jawbone from a meat-eating dinosaur ever found in Maryland. It's also believed to be the first find from the Early Cretaceous period anywhere in the Eastern United States.

This isn't the first time a young person has found a fossil at the park. Almost as soon as the park opened last October, 9-year-old Gabrielle Block of Annandale, Va., found a dinosaur tailbone.

LARGO, Md. (WUSA) -- A new state bicycle safety law is in effect less than two weeks after a recent deadly crash in the county involving a bicyclist and a sport utility vehicle.

The new law requires at least a 3-foot buffer between vehicles and bicycles and that motorists yield right-of-way to bicyclists.

Prince George's County - with its high population, dense living spaces and few sidewalks along major roads - tops the state in pedestrian deaths and fatal motor vehicle crashes, according to the State Highway Administration. More than 100 pedestrians and drivers have died each year since 2002.

"The new law is very specific and does give a specific buffer so the motorist and the rider can share the road safely," said Peter Moe, bicycle safety coordinator for the Maryland Highway Safety Office at the State Highway Administration.

Moe said bicycle safety "is a two-way street."

Laurel Man Dies “Suspiciously”

A man’s body was found off a roadway in Laurel early Friday morning, rounding up police investigation.

Police were called to Cranberry South Road at around 5:30 am from a sick or injured person. When officers arrived, they found Roy Jackson, 41-years old, already dead. He was suffering from some trauma to his upper body.

Jackson's body was taken to the medical examiner where an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

For now police say they are investigating Jackson's death as suspicious.
